Interview with Blake Cohen, fIlmer of Too Much Love II

What is up with Too Much Love II?

TML 2 is a video made by me and my good friend Brett Dasovic. It has profiles on Jeph Howard, Michael Garlinghouse, Brett Dasovic, John Bolino and Chris Farmer.

How and why did you come up with the subtitle ‘the breakdown’?

Well forever we just kinda called it Way Too Much Love but it felt boring and had no real meaning it was just kinda the name by default. At the end of the summer we took two tours, one of the midwest and the other on the east coast. The midwest tour was a story to tell. We had a 1989 Tioga RV and its was the greatest vehicle anyone could ask for when you have 7 of your closest friends going on a road trip. Unfortunately it turned out to not be that greatest vehicle we expected because on our way to Rockford Illinois a piston shot out and blew a hole in the oil tank leaving us stranded on the side of the road in the middle of no where. Making a long story short we were stranded in the great state of Illinois for a week and didn’t even get our RV back, the mechanic gave us his truck to go back home hence “The Breakdown”.

How did you motivate such prestigious skaters to rip it for a local video?

Brett, Jeph, Michael and I have been skating together for years and filming for videos was an everyday thing and the footage would just start to stack. I used to just give away footage to other videos but I was sick of that and wanted to work on my own project. Making this video was something the four of us believed in and felt strongly for. Chris moving back to Minnesota was a great addition to the video. He was down for filming since the start since most of his sponsors made a video last year he was free to film for TML2. John Bolino was the last addition to the Minnesota crew. Last year he was supposed to come to Minnesota to film for TML 1 but hurt his hip and was unable to blade for sometime so I had a plane ticket with is name on it since last year. Unaware that it would lead to him moving to Minnesota and witnessing some of the best skating I have seen in awhile.

I know that you and Brett Dasovic work together on the TML series. Who does what?

Correct Brett and I put our minds together to try and make the best video we could possibly make. Brett is the one in charge of doing all the editing while I filmed the whole video and I am also the one in charge of all the sales and money thats goes into making this movie. I also work with Mike Rios to make the cover and Anthony Esquivel who does a great job on our dvd menu.

What makes your video not just another skate video?
Well I feel a lot of the videos in the industry and forced and sloppy. So many of the best videos that come out are all footage filmed on any kind of camera people can get there hands on. People not knowing how to properly use a fisheye and just pointing it at a skater. Too Much Love 2 is good quality footage with good quality skating and its hard to find that in our industry, its usually one or the other.

What do you love the most about filming blade videos, and what do you hate the most?

I love hanging out with my best friends and blading from sun up to sun down its why I do what I do. The worst part about filming is that I don’t get to strap on the blades and cruise a free park or ledge spot as often as I would like to.
